Dog Biscuits
Unlike dogs who know how to “come” and “roll over”, the only trick Phoebe knows is “sit” and that’s only if you have a really good treat in hand. She doesn’t really do fetch or play any other games either. But there are a few things she does likes to do.
For example, she likes to sun in the backyard…
Lie in front of the fireplace…
And receive belly rubs…
Jokes aside, we are really fortunate to have Phoebe in our lives. Those of you who have dogs will agree that they give so much more than they receive. And she is never mad at me, even when I am too lazy to walk her or too busy to play.
I named this blog after Phoebe because she is always there in the kitchen when I cook. Sure, she’s there because she hopes I will accidentally drop some food from the counter. But I think she’s also there because she knows that the kitchen is a calm and happy place for me. It’s such an ego boost to know that no matter what I make Phoebe will want to eat it.
So on this special day, I decided to thank Pheobe for all that she does for our little family by baking her some homemade biscuits. Unlike treats you buy at the store that contain chemicals and preservatives, these use wholesome ingredients like cornmeal, parsley and eggs. They came out to this sunny yellow color with pretty green specks.
They are really easy to put together. I made them in less than 30 minutes. I did a bit of math in my head and I think these homemade biscuits turned out to be way less expensive than the stuff I buy at the store.
Even though I was really tempted to give these biscuits a try myself, I decided to let Phoebe be the judge. The verdict? Bright eyes and a wagging tail.
Happy birthday, my dear friend.
Dog Biscuits
From “Real Food for Dogs” by “Arden Moore (Yes, there are cookbooks for dogs and I own them)
- All-purpose flour, 2 cups
- Cornmeal, 1 cup
- Salt, a pinch
- Egg, 1 large
- Vegetable oil, 3 tablespoons
- Fresh parsley, 2 teaspoons, chopped
- Chicken broth, 3/4 cup, I like a free-range organic one
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Mix the flour, corn meal and salt in a bowl.
In a separate and larger bowl, whip the egg with the oil, parsley and chicken broth. Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture and mix until a soft dough forms.
Knead the dough and roll it out to 1/2-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut the dough. I used a 2-inch biscuit cutter, which yielded 18 biscuits.
Bake for 15 minutes. Cool the biscuits before serving.
